2025年、惜しくもこの世を去ったヒップホップ・ソウルの先駆者ディアンジェロ。四半世紀前に彼がリリースしたアルバム『Voodoo』は、ネオ・ソウルの歴史を塗り替えた傑作として、今なお語り継がれている。その中でも“Spanish Joint”は、ジャズ、ラテン、R&Bが融合した独創的なトラックであり、ディアンジェロの音楽的野心と革新性を象徴する一曲だ。
今回、Cruisicによるカバーは、原曲のグルーヴを継承しながら、よりシャープでダンサブルな都会的サウンドへと再構築したインスト・ナンバーで、2025年のサウンドスケープにふさわしい新しい息吹を吹き込んでいる。ディアンジェロが掲げた「迫力ある芸術的ブラック・ミュージック」という理念を、Cruisicならではの感性で昇華し、疾走するリズムの中に魂の記憶と未来への希望を響かせている。

僕たちCruisicは、2024年11月にファーストアルバム Euphoriaをリリースして以降、初となるシングルを、天才的な個性と圧倒的なカリスマ性を放ち続けたR&Bソウルシンガー D’Angelo のコアファンが深く愛する名曲 “Spanish Joint”のカヴァーをリリースする事を決めました。

当初、この作品はレコードでのリリースを前提に、2025年初頭から企画をスタートさせ。8月末にはレコーディングを終えて、更にミックスダウンを経て仕上げたわずか3日後──10月14日に、D’Angelo本人の訃報を知ることとなりました。

なぜ今、このタイミングでリリースするのか。
それは追悼の意を込めつつも、何よりもその悲劇が起こる前からSpanish Jointという楽曲そのものを愛するCruisicの純粋な衝動を届けたく、発表する事としました。

この作品は僕たちCruisicなりに構築したシーケンス、ドラム、及びベースのグルーヴを軸に、オルガンを主役としたインストゥルメンタルへと再解釈したものです。
原曲へのリスペクトを深く抱きながらも、単なるカバーにとどまらず、新たな息吹と解釈をもたらす作品を目指しました。

世界中のリスナーが“Spanish Joint”を再び、そして新しく感じるきっかけとなることを願って止みません。

In 2025, the world lost one of the most influential pioneers of hip-hop soul — D’Angelo.
A quarter-century has passed since the release of Voodoo, yet the album remains a masterpiece that reshaped the history of Black music and continues to inspire artists across generations. Among its tracks, “Spanish Joint” stands out as a symbol of D’Angelo’s musical ambition — a seamless fusion of jazz, Latin, and R&B that still feels bold and timeless.
Cruisic’s new cover inherits the original groove while reimagining it as a sharper, danceable, and urban instrumental fit for the soundscape of 2025.
Their interpretation channels D’Angelo’s vision of powerful, artistic Black music, elevating it through Cruisic’s own sensibility — a sound where rhythmic momentum carries both memory and hope forward.

After releasing our first album Euphoria in November 2024, we chose “Spanish Joint” as the first single to mark our next step — a song deeply loved by the hardcore fans of D’Angelo, the R&B/Soul singer who forever radiated genius, individuality, and unmatched charisma.
The project began in early 2025 with the intention of releasing on vinyl.
Recording was completed at the end of August, the final mixdown shortly thereafter — and just three days later, on October 14, we received the news of D’Angelo’s passing.
So why release it now?
While this release carries our respect and remembrance, more importantly, we simply, genuinely loved “Spanish Joint” since its release.
That feeling is what we wanted to share with the world.
We reinterpreted the song through our own arrangement , drums, bass-driven groove, centered around the organ as the melodic vehicle.
With deep respect for D’Angelo, we aimed not for a mere replication, but for a new breath — a new interpretation — output through Cruisic’s musicality.
We hope this release becomes a moment for listeners around the world to rediscover “Spanish Joint” — again, and anew.
